Door_Knob6Choosing doors are as important as choosing wall paper for your home. It would not be quite enough to choose the best door and buy a cheap and common door knob. The reason behind this is that you would have to replace that perfect door soon enough if you keep hinging and unhinging it because you had to replace the door knob because you keep getting locked in because it’s broken.

As for most classical door knob finishes, it is best to use a copper door knob since it is, for one, going to add flavor in whatever door you choose to use. It can also be the accent color of your entrance door or it could blend with the maple door that you have chosen for your bedroom.

A copper door knob does favor a more classical tone in your home. It adds a bit of a history into the bigger picture. Most keyed cylinders that are made out of copper would look like they have been around for a long time since most designs are more ornate than their contemporary.

The golden flair of a copper door knob would add the sense of majesty that you need in an otherwise simple home. If you only have a few doors to spare then it is best to go with quality copper door knobs.

As an added bonus, a copper door knob would help in the spread on infections and bacteria in your home. If you are health conscious then this kind of finish is best for you. If you can have one that is made out of copper entirely then it is best. If there is anything that gets to cling to your copper door knob, those bacteria would die within eight hours.

If these are not enough reasons to consider this kind of door knob, then what else is?

Door_Knob17Installing a door knob can be a one-man job if you have the mechanical skills to do it. But for most of us who are mechanically challenged but want to cut on the labor cost of changing or installing a door knob in our kitchen or bedroom then this is a two-man job.

Having the right equipment such as a drill (on which you can change the bit for the right hole sizes), a one inch chisel, machine screws, at least one large nail (this would be used for marking and making impressions), a hammer and a hole saw  and paddle bit would be needed to make sure things come out without a hitch.

The level of difficulty of installing a door knob would also depend on the kind of knob that you are using.

  1. Mark the place where you want the door knob to go. Make sure that you mark the place where you will put the latch as well.
  2. Using the nail and the hammer mark were the hole for the latch will go. Then drill a hole 2 and a 1/2 deep with a properly sized paddle bit.
  3. Mark the place where you need the knob hole to go. Use the hole saw to drill the hole all the way through the other side. If it doesn’t go through, use the nail to push through and mark there the knob should go.
  4. Mark around where the latch needs to go. Use the one-inch chisel to deepen that area and screw the latch in place.
  5. Slide the two parts of the door knob so that the mechanical screws are aligned. Make sure that the center where the locking mechanism is aligned otherwise it wouldn’t come together and would not work. Secure the knob with screws.
  6. The striker plate can be put in place by following the instructions on how to put the latch in. Just make sure that the hole is only deep enough to keep the latch in place. Secure the striker plate by means of screws.
  7. Hinge the door and try out if you did a good job.
